Although Joseon was fundamentals were Confucianism but then Confucianism was not a religion, Buddhism was still the religion of the people. Although the Hangeul literature published in the fifty years since its invention in the mid-15th century, Hangeul literature relating to Buddhism are above all others in numbers and quality. Even though there was a pro-Confucianist and anti-Buddhist sentiment in the Joseon dynasty on the surface, Buddhism continued to hold an important place in the hearts of the common people. This was especially true of the royals who held important positions during the invention and first applications of Hangeul during Sejong & Sejo’s reigns. They had such devotion to Buddhism that they keenly promoted works that translated Buddhist scriptures to Korean and published the results.

One of the1st book that was publish in Hangeul was Worinseokbo, or “Moon’s Reflection and Buddha’s Life”, is an annotated and revised version of two great Hangeul books of early Joseon, Songs of the Moon’s Reflection on a Thousand Rivers (“Worincheongangjigok”) and Episodes from the Life of the Buddha (“Seokbosangjeol”) 1st published in 1447. The second book, a biography of Sakyamuni, was compiled by Prince Suyang according to a royal order from King Sejong, the prince’s father and the creator of Hangeul. The king wanted to publish the book to honour his deceased consort, Queen Soheon. The first book, Songs, was written by King Sejong himself, after he saw & touched by the work of his son, and printed with newly moulded Gabinja Font scripts. The Korean printing script font used to print this book had been the first of its kind since the invention of Hangeul, and copper was melted in order to make the typeset. This book not only demonstrates the font style of Hangeul at the infancy of the alphabet

These two volumes of Worinseokbo are from the first revised edition published in 1459, five years after Prince Suyang took the throne as King Sejo. Volume 1 begins with the introduction of the newly invented Hangeul system under the famous title, Sejong Eoje Hunmin Jeongeum (“Proper Sounds Created by King Sejong to Instruct the People”) followed by a piece of Palsangdo, or the painting on the eight phases of Buddha’s life, and two forwards written by Sejong respectively for Worinseokbo and Seokbosangjeol.

The first volume of the book, consisting of 52 chapters, deals with the life of Sakyamuni in the past world before he became Buddha in this world. The second volume consists of 77 chapters and is focused on the origin of the Sakyas, an Indian clan into which the Buddha was born a prince, and the birth of Sakyamuni. This second volume also contains a brief article about the introduction of Buddhism into China as well as an introduction of Worinseokbo
