英祖東宮日記. The Diary of Yeongjo Donggungilgi Crown Prince Log book written from 1721-1724

This diary is to study the political power of the Crown Prince during the reign of Gyeongjong. The Crown Prince Geum, later named Yeongjo, led his everyday life in the palace since he was formally designated as the Crown prince, and his officials kept official diaries for him every day. Now these diaries are preserved as the name of “Yeongjo-Donggung-Ilgi (英祖東宮日記)” in Kyujanggak Archive. Most official diaries for the Crown Prince have the contents mainly composed of the royal lecture and royal ceremony. In most cases, such contents can be read as what’s somewhat non-political with pure education and formal rituals. But, with close reading we can find out that even seemingly non-political contents have important political implications, for everyday life of the crown prince is the process and result of the micro-politics he and his royal family and his officials are involved in with one another. In this viewpoint, “Yeongjo-Donggung-Ilgi” is one of good examples to give new light on the historical character of the official diaries for the crown prince. Yeongjo, who is famous for the firm decision-making for impartial Tangpyung (蕩平) politics, showed his such typical political character also as the crown prince which has been point out in the diaries. Official diaries for the Crown prince so far have caused little attraction to historians who specialized in the traditional political history with limited interest in the sources like formal chronicles and personal anthologies but this time to treat these diaries earnestly for the purpose of doing political history & the masses.
