Yeongjo reforms

Yeongjo who reign from 1724-1776 realising the detrimental effect on state administration of factional strife during the latter half of the 17the century attempted to end factional strife as soon as he ascended the throne. It was becoming fashionable among merchants & artisans to obtain charters by creating a new commodity through minor refinement of goods already chartered. The so called estuary or auxiliary merchants monopolised commodities from the provinces of Gyeonggi-do & Chungcheong-do & other wholesale merchant had a nationwide networks for the sale of Ginseng. The merchant of Gaeseong or Songdo compete vigorously with the Hanyang counterpart in wholesale activities conducting tripartite international trade between Japan & China, they traded ginseng & other Joseon products for Japanese silver & Chinese books & silk. They even accompanied the envoy mission to China in their quest for gain. They went into business of buying up paper for trade to China from the original producers in Buddhist temples, horse hair for hat from the remote part of Southern Jejudo & otter fur from hunter on the east coast. The monopoly & the wholesale activities created a larger demand for silver & copper which in turn gave impetus to the mining industries. In the 18th century however copper mines were also developed when the Japanese stop exporting copper & Qing China demanded great supplies of the metal

There was an increase in the number of Yanban that has been root cause of their impoverishment as their land holding has been divided equally among sons at the least & often among the daughter as well whether married or not. The Yanban class declining fortunes has their choice of either engaging in agriculture as an owner cultivator or in lucrative enterprise indirectly. Money lending was another field they entered as trade & currency circulation expanded
